The Coven Session: A Witchy Photoshoot in Guthrie, Oklahoma

Date

The story

Some sessions are about one woman. This one was about the circle.

A coven is not a costume. It is what happens when women decide they are done doing the hard work alone. On a fall day in Guthrie, Oklahoma, four women gathered to do exactly that: honor their shadows, lean on each other, and step into their power together.

Women have been gathering in circles for as long as there have been women. Around fires, around kitchen tables, in the quiet spaces where we finally say what we have been carrying. A coven is the modern version of that, and it is just as needed now as it ever was. When one woman falters, another holds the candle. When one woman rises, she lifts the rest with her. That is the energy this session was built around.

Honoring the shadows

There is a part of every woman that she has been told to hide. The anger, the grief, the old stories, the parts she is not proud of. This session was built on the opposite idea. You do not heal by pushing the dark away. You heal by going into it, digging down to the
deepest part of yourself, and staying there long enough to understand what it has been trying to tell you.

That is hard to do alone. It is a lot easier when the women beside you are doing it too.

The shadow is not your enemy. It holds your boundaries, your instincts and your hardest lessons, and it carries a lot of your strength too. When a woman stops fighting that part of herself, she stops spending so much energy keeping it quiet. That energy goes somewhere better. It becomes confidence, honesty and the kind of presence people feel when you walk into a room.

Light and dark, in flow

You will see some of the women in white and some in black. That was intentional. It is the yin and the yang, the light and the dark, moving together in flow. You cannot deny
either one. The light needs the dark and the dark needs the light, and a whole woman carries both. In these photos they do not compete. They stand side by side, and they balance each other out.

As a photographer, I think about this balance in every session I do. Nobody is only soft or only fierce, only calm or only wild. The women I photograph are always both. This
session simply made that visible, with the white and the black working together in one frame the way they do inside every one of us.

Walking through the smoke

One of the most important parts of the session was the walk through the smoke. It is a simple image with a big meaning. These women have been through their shadow. They did not go around it. They walked through it, and what you are seeing is them coming out the other side, into the light, into clarity.

No one comes out of that walk the same.

Clarity is what is left when you stop running from yourself. It is quiet and steady, and it does not need to prove anything. Looking through these images, that is what I see: women who know who they are, and who are no longer asking permission to be it.

The tools that were handed down

The candles, the goblets, the crystal ball and the mirror you see in the gallery are not props. They represent tools that were passed down from ancestors, the ones women have always used to connect back to themselves. Intuition is one of them. So is stillness. So is the willingness to listen to what you already know.

Each woman used her tools to connect to herself and to her support team, whatever you call that. Angels, spirit guides, ancestors, the women who came before. Name it however feels true to you. The point is that no one is walking this alone, on this side or the other.

That support team is real to these women, and it does not have to look the same for everyone. For one woman it might be a grandmother she never got to meet. For another it might be a guide she can sense but cannot explain. What matters is that she feels held, and that she knows she can ask for help and trust that it will come.

Stepping into your power

This session was about women owning their gifts and leaning into their intuition. It was about trusting that inner voice, and about standing in a circle of women who trust it too.

When women support each other, something shifts. The shadows get lighter to carry. The gifts get louder. The power stops feeling like something you have to earn and starts feeling like something you remember.

I am honored I got to witness it, and to capture it.

My hope is that every woman who sees this gallery feels a little braver. That she recognizes her own shadow and her own light in these photos, and that she remembers she does not have to go through any of it alone. Find your circle. Trust what you know.
Then walk through the smoke.

Want a session like this?

If you are craving a session that goes deeper than a pretty picture, I would love to create it with you. Whether it is a witchy coven shoot with your closest women, a boudoir session that reconnects you to yourself, or something that is entirely your own idea, I photograph women across Oklahoma, including Guthrie and the surrounding area.

Come as you are. Bring your people. Bring your shadows and your light.
